A disturbing and often bleak analysis of the automated future of work has been named 2015’s business book of the year. (2015 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year)的获奖作品是《机器人的崛起:大规模失业的威胁与科技》(The Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of Mass Unemployment),这本书对工作自动化的未来做出了令人不安和常常令人消沉的分析。

Martin Ford, author of The Rise of the Robots , received the £30,000 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award at a ceremony in New York on Tuesday.

The book reflects growing anxiety in some quarters about the possible negative impact of automation on jobs, from manufacturing to professional services. The subtitle of its UK edition warns of “the threat of mass unemployment” and, in the US edition, foresees “a jobless future”.

Mr Ford, founder of a Silicon Valley software development company, suggests “a fundamental restructuring of our economic rules” may be needed to mitigate the impact of the advance of robotics and automation. He proposes a guaranteed minimum basic income — or “citizen’s dividend” — as one radical remedy.

Not all the judges agreed with the book’s proposed solutions but nobody questioned the force of its argument.

In a closely fought debate about the six shortlisted titles, one judge described Mr Ford’s book as “a hard-headed and all-encompassing” analysis of the problem. Lionel Barber, FT editor and chair of the judging panel, called The Rise of the Robots “a tightly written and deeply researched addition to the public policy debate”.

The book — published by Basic Books and Oneworld Publications — won out against a strong shortlist dominated by books on technology.

The other finalists, each of which will receive £10,000, were: Losing the Signal , by Jacque McNish and Sean Silcoff, who look at how BlackBerry went off course; Digital Gold , Nathaniel Popper’s examination of the rise of bitcoin, the virtual currency; How Music Got Free , Stephen Witt’s history of the way piracy and peer-to-peer sharing have disrupted the recorded music industry; Anne-Marie Slaughter’s new book Unfinished Business , about the challenge of achieving gender balance; and Misbehaving , in which Richard Thaler traces the development of behavioural economics. 其他入围者分别是:《失去信号:黑莓离奇崛起与惊人陨落背后不为人知的故事》(Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of Blackberry),作者杰基? 波佩尔(Nathaniel Popper)审视了虚拟货币比特币的崛起;《音乐如何变免费:一整代人犯下同样罪行的后果》(How Music Got Free: What Happens When an Entire Generation Commits the Same Crime?),作者斯蒂芬?

Since 2005, the business book of the year award has gone to the book that provides “the most compelling and enjoyable insight into modern business issues”. The 2014 winner was Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty. 皮凯蒂(Thomas Piketty)的《21世纪的资本》(Capital in the Twenty-First Century)。

At the same ceremony in New York, Dominic Barton, McKinsey’s global managing director, awarded the Bracken Bower Prize for young business writers to Christopher Clearfield and András Tilcsik. Their proposed book would look at how businesses can manage the risk of catastrophic failure. The £15,000 prize goes to the best proposal for a business book about the challenges and opportunities presented by growth by authors under 35.
